What is a “Property” in Google Analytics?

In Google Analytics, a “Property” is defined as any website, mobile app or other digital asset that you want to track:

  • A Property lives within an account in Google Analytics
  • A Google Analytics account can contain one or more properties
  • Each Property is assigned a unique tracking ID that enables Google Analytics to collect analytics and generate reports

Why Properties Matter in Google Analytics

Properties are a fundamental component of Google Analytics and enable marketers to track and analyze user behavior across different digital assets. Properties serve as the foundation for data collection, segmentation, analysis, and management. They empower businesses and marketers to gain insights into user behavior, optimize performance, and make data-driven decisions to enhance their digital presence.

Property Structure in Universal Analytics (UA) vs. Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

In UA, the analytics account structure is  organized into three groups: Accounts, Properties and Views.

  • The “Account” level equates to an overall organization (i.e. Tixr).
  • The “Property” level contains each distinct web property (like a website or an app) with its own unique tracking code (i.e. Tixr blog)
  • “Views” are where you can segment and analyze different data & reports. For example, you might create a view that focuses on a specific section of your website (i.e. all website data).

In GA4, the analytics account structure is organized slightly differently: Accounts, Properties and Data Streams

  • Similar to UA, the “Account” level still equates to an overall organization.
  • Similar to UA, the “Property” level still equates to a distinct web property (i.e website).
  • But unlike UA, “Views” are not available for each property. Rather, each Property will have “Data Streams” that flow into the overall property. A data stream represents any flow of data from a customer touchpoint (i.e. an app; you can have data streams for both iOS and Android)

How to Create a Property in Google Analytics 4

Per Google's support page, you’ll use the GA4 Setup Assistant to create a new GA4 property that collects data in parallel with your existing Universal Analytics property. There are no changes made to your Universal Analytics property, and it will continue to collect data as always (until the July 1st sunset deadline). You can access both properties via the property selector or Admin screen.
      1. In Google Analytics, click Admin (lower left corner).
      2. In the Account column, make sure that your desired account is selected. (If you only have one Google Analytics account, it's already selected.)
      3. In the Property column, select the Universal Analytics property that currently collects data for your website.
      4. In the Property column, click GA4 Setup Assistant. It's the first option in the Property column.

      6. In the Create a new Google Analytics 4 property pop-up screen, you'll have one of the following options, depending on how your site is tagged:
      7. On the Set up a Google tag page, select the option that best describes your situation and follow the instructions to finish creating your new GA4 property. Visit Step 6 on this page to understand your tag options available.
      8. After you're done with the Setup wizard, you'll see "You have successfully connected your properties" at the top of your Google Analytics 4 Property Setup Assistant page. Click Go to your GA4 property to open Setup Assistant in your new GA4 property. Setup Assistant in Google Analytics 4 properties will help guide you through recommended features and settings to help you finish setting up your Google Analytics 4 property.

NOTE: It can take up to 30 minutes for data to begin appearing in your new GA4 property. To verify that your data is being collected, browse your website, then select Realtime from the report navigation. You should see activity in the Realtime
      9. report.

To create a Property in Universal Analytics, follow the instructions here. If you’re a first time UA user, you can create a GA4 property by following these steps.

NOTE:  On July 1, 2023, Google will sunset its website analytics platform Universal Analytics (UA) and replace it with the newer generation Google Analytics 4 (GA4). After the 7/1 deadline, Google will begin phasing out its support for UA and all UA properties will stop processing new data. If you haven’t yet transitioned to GA4, we highly recommend getting started by creating a property ahead of the July 1st deadline and begin using GA4 in parallel with UA for your events. This will ensure a smoother transition and ample time to get familiar with the new interface and features in the new platform.

Verifying Your GA4 Property is Collecting Analytics

After you've created a property in GA4, there are several ways to verify whether your data is being collected (refer to this article for context). The easiest of those is to use the 'Realtime' report (Reports > Realtime in left sidebar) to check if the data (of website visitors) is coming in. If your property is configured correctly, you should data populating in real-time. If you see 0 users in real-time reports, something is misconfigured.
